Analytik Jena AG opens a new research center in Überlingen

18-Feb-2002

Jena, February 18, 2002 - Upon successfully acquiring an expert team of highly qualified and experienced research and development engineers, Analytik Jena AG has founded a new company at a long-established atomic spectrometry site in Überlingen on Lake Constance, Germany.

The company has been given the name AJ Überlingen GmbH and is a full 100% subsidiary of Analytik Jena AG. Analytik Jena, with its significant decision to found AJ Überlingen, has paved the way for the company's further successful growth. Central to the acquisition were the integration of the experienced developmental team into the company and the rapid expansion of its marketing activities. AJ Überlingen GmbH will be managed by Dr. Bernard Radziuk and Dr. Gerhard Schlemmer, who both profit from years of experience in atomic spectrometry and who held leading management positions in Perkin Elmer's research, development, marketing and support units. Both general managers have also attained international recognition through their research work as well as through their activities for standardization organizations and at international congresses such as CANAS, the foremost gathering of atomic spectroscopy researchers and users. A further eight highly qualified scientists round out the AJ Überlingen GmbH team.

In its own estimation, Analytik Jena has thus acquired the world's most effective team of developmental engineers in the area of atomic absorption spectroscopy. With this boon in personnel, Analytik Jena has not only secured access to its new staff's unique expertise, but has also opened up potential new contacts and collaboration with numerous important institutions.

With the new products it has slated for development, AJ Überlingen will improve Analytik Jena's position in international competition, and will particularly strengthen the company's core Analytical Solutions business unit over a long period of time.

Cooperation between the development teams based in Jena and in Überlingen will also boost innovation appreciably. This collaboration should provide Analytik Jena with an approximately two- to three-year technological lead in this market segment. The goal is to introduce world premiere equipment systems for instrumental analysis to the market and to secure a share of the atomic spectrometry market - all within a short period of time. Analytik Jena expects the first significant sales boost from the introduction of these new products to the market to show in fiscal year 2003/2004.

"The founding of the new subsidiary at the long-standing site for atomic spectrometry - the former development and production site of the global market leader, Perkin Elmer - is Analytik Jena's most important and strategically significant investment since the company itself was founded. It gives us the unique opportunity to strengthen our currently fastest growing unit, atomic spectrometry, with extensive developmental expertise and a broad network of contacts, thus increasing our international market reputation considerably. With this substantial investment, we are continuing to pursue our international growth strategy," explained Klaus Berka, chairman of the board of Analytik Jena AG.

The company furthermore plans to make use of the production and logistics know-how at the site, applying it to Analytik Jena's highly specialized analysis techniques. As a first step, AJ Überlingen GmbH will assume the responsibility for an Analytik Jena developmental project that is on the verge of completion, which it will carry forward to serial production in the second half of 2002. The Überlingen site is also of great importance to Analytik Jena's sales and marketing.

An additional application and distribution center is in planning, which will provide complete customer-oriented service for clients from southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Two additional experienced employees have been added to the staff for tasks related to this project.
