WACKER's Stetten Salt Mine Celebrates 150th Anniversary

13-Sep-2004

WACKER's Stetten salt mine - near Haigerloch, Germany - marked its 150th anniversary at a ceremony attended by political, business and administrative guests. The Munich-based chemical company's commemorative event recalled the beginnings of the "Hohenzollerisch-Württembergisch Steinsalz-Bergwerk" in which sinking of the first pit in 1854 marked the start of mining operations in Stetten. WACKER leased and ran the salt mine from 1924 and then purchased it in 1960.

WACKER CEO Dr. Peter-Alexander Wacker stressed to guests the importance of combining innovation with resolve: "Farsighted planning and flexible marketing strategies ensured our salt mine's success over the years, even in turbulent times." Thanks to ongoing investments - including modern extraction technology and a new magnetic separator for industrial salt - Stetten's salt mine is also well-prepared for the future, Dr. Wacker noted.

Some 60 Stetten employees process 500,000 metric tons of salt per year. A large part of Stetten's industrial salt is used by WACKER's Burghausen site, in Bavaria, for manufacturing silicones, hyperpure silicon, organic intermediates and fumed silica. Other product appli-cations include winter road salt, industrial salts for water softening and ceramic glazes, brine, and salt lick stones for livestock.
