Varian, Inc. Board of Directors Appoints Martin O'Donoghue as Vice President, Scientific Instruments

11-Nov-2003

The Board of Directors of Varian, Inc. appointed Martin O'Donoghue as Vice President, Scientific Instruments. As such, he will lead the company's largest segment which generated 65%, or $552 million, of the company's fiscal year 2003 revenues.

O'Donoghue succeeds Garry W. Rogerson, who had been acting in the position while serving as President and Chief Operating Officer since November 2002. Rogerson was named Chief Executive Officer and elected to the company's Board of Directors at the same meeting today.

Prior to his appointment, O'Donoghue had been Vice President, Analytical Instruments. In his new position, O'Donoghue adds responsibility for the company's leading-edge product line, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. He continues as an officer of the company and as the senior executive responsible for mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, dissolution testing, chromatography and consumable supplies product lines. The Scientific Instruments segment has sales and service offices in every major country in the world and manufacturing plants throughout the US, Europe, and Australia.

The operating executives reporting to O'Donoghue are Janice C. Tschida, Vice President and General Manager, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Systems; Greg Davis, Vice President and General Manager, Melbourne Analytical Instruments; Stephen K. Schultheis, General Manager, Analytical Supplies; James E. Swon, General Manager, Pharmaceutical Products; and John D. Mills, Director, Chromatography Systems.

O'Donoghue began his career at Varian Associates, Inc. (Varian, Inc.'s predecessor company) in 1985 and has held numerous management positions in the company's chromatography systems business, including Vice President and General Manager of chromatography systems and analytical supplies.

O'Donoghue received his bachelor of science degree in industrial chemistry from the University of Limerick in Ireland and his MBA in organizational leadership from J. F. Kennedy University in Walnut Creek, Calif.
