Materia and Sigma-Aldrich Announce Exclusive Distribution Deal for Grubbs' Metathesis Catalysts

19-Aug-2003

Materia, Inc. (Pasadena, CA) and Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (St. Louis, MO) (NASDAQ: SIAL) have entered into an agreement providing Sigma-Aldrich the exclusive right to distribute research quantities of Materia's proprietary Grubbs' catalysts and Hoveyda-Grubbs' Catalysts. Financial considerations of the ten-year agreement were not disclosed. Materia's relationships with other distributors of these products were terminated as of July 1, 2003. Other catalog companies and resellers who have been or are found to be operating without a license from Materia will be notified of their infringement and required to discontinue their representation of these products.

"This agreement substantiates Materia's intellectual property position as well as our close working relationship with Sigma-Aldrich," says Richard Fisher, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Materia. "Sigma-Aldrich is not only the premier distributor of research chemicals and reagents worldwide but also plays an important and growing role in pharmaceutical fine chemicals and custom manufacturing. We are already pursuing opportunities to co-develop several applications of our metathesis technologies for Fine Chemicals and are looking forward to our expanding relationship with Sigma-Aldrich."

"Materia's metathesis technology is an ideal addition to our growing portfolio of catalysts for pharmaceutical discovery and Fine Chemicals production" commented Geoff Irvine, Manager Business Development at Sigma-Aldrich. "The Grubbs catalysts enable unique transformations on complex molecules and are already a mainstay of synthetic and medicinal chemists. We are very pleased with our maturing relationship with Materia."
