Integrated report published: reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 29% compared with 2002

In its Report 2010, BASF demonstrates how it creates measurable value for employees, shareholders, customers and society with its innovative products and solutions. BASF reached an important goal in 2010: Specific greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by 29% compared with 2002, so that the company reached its goal for 2020 for the first time.

The report combines economic, ecological and social aspects. The publication meets the internationally recognized Standards of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for sustainability reporting. The independent institution reaffirmed maximum transparency for the fourth time in succession, issuing an A+ rating.

The report documents BASF’s entrepreneurial performance and shows how sustainability contributes to corporate success. BASF measures its performance on the basis of clearly defined targets for the three areas economy, ecology and society: In 2010, BASF again earned a premium on its cost of capital with a record premium of €3.5 billion. The proportion of senior managers with international experience rose to 78%.

BASF is currently working on new goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and is continuously enhancing its reporting on greenhouse gas emissions. For the first time in 2010, BASF takes into account the newly drafted standard of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for reporting emissions along the value-adding chain. BASF has contributed its know-how to the development of this new standard elaborated by international sustainability experts. The new guidelines aim for more transparency and conformity in corporate carbon reporting.

The result of BASF’s corporate carbon footprint for 2010: In addition to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from its own production BASF reduced its customers’ CO2-footprint by 322 million tons through innovative climate protection solutions.

Last year, BASF achieved once again external recognition for its sustainable development strategy and its implementation in the company from a number of sources: for the tenth time running, the company was listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and tops again the Materials sector of the prestigious Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index. In addition, BASF is listed in the new Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI).
