AstraZeneca is building a pharmaceutical solid forms production facility near Cairo
AstraZeneca is building a pharmaceutical solid forms production facility in Sixth of October City (Madinat Sittah Uktubar) near Cairo. The new facility will have 7,000m² of floor space and will employ up to 300 new employees when completed towards the end of 2007. The initial products from the plant will be for sale in the Egyptian domestic market but further increases in production will supply nearby regions such as the European and Middle Eastern markets. The facility will be the company's first production facility in the Middle East.
According to AstraZeneca, Egypt's pharmaceutical sector holds the largest domestic drug-manufacturing base in the region, supplying 30% of the total market. The market is controlled by private sector companies in terms of sales value. Most multinationals are active in the local market.
