Shell Chemicals announces new polymer polyol plant

19-Nov-2001

Shell chemicals Limited has announced that a new polymer polyol plant is to be built by Shell Nederland Chemie (SNC) BV at Pernis, near Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The project has now entered the detailed engineering and construction planning phase. The 50,000 tonnes per year, world-class facility is scheduled to come on-stream in the second quarter of 2003 and will be one of the largest polymer polyol plants in Europe.

Commenting on the announcement, Fran Keeth, Executive Vice President Shell Chemicals Limited said: "This investment, coupled with the expansion in polyol capacity at Seraya in Singapore due in the second quarter of 2002, will strengthen the Shell Chemicals position in the global polyurethane industry. This will increase our chemicals companies' total capacity for flexible polyols to over 400,000 tonnes a year."

The new polymer polyol plant at Pernis will produce high solids styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) polymer polyol using proprietary stabiliser technology. Responding to customer needs, the new plant will provide high quality polymer polyols for high load bearing, conventional and high resilience slabstock as well as cold cure, moulded foam production. These polymer polyols are used in the production of high hardness low density flexible foams sought by both furniture and automotive manufacturers.
