ANGUS to withdraw sales of nitrofuels outside of the US
"Fuel safety is linked to product quality and consistency as well as requiring a strong product stewardship program. While we have consistently improved and strengthened our product stewardship program in the United States over the last several years with support from the NHRA and through the introduction of more manageable grades of ready-blended Nitromethane and methanol, we have been unable to obtain the expected product stewardship support for this product at venues outside of the NHRA-authorized sites in the U.S.," said Nanette Hermsen, global marketing manager for fuel additives. "ANGUS is fully-committed to the safe and secure handling of the nitromethane molecule and will continue to pursue long-term sustainable use and supply for a wide variety of uses and applications where ANGUS safety and security standards are met."
Nitromethane is a versatile chemical used within a wide variety of industrial applications produced at the ANGUS plant in Sterlington, Louisiana. It is used as a stabilizer for halogenated hydrocarbons, as a component of special fuels for internal combustion engines, as a solvent for polymers in coatings, and as an extraction solvent or solvent for chemical reactions. It is also a raw material in the synthesis of many useful chemicals such as chloropicrin and tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane. However, when proper safe handling procedures and security measures are not used, nitromethane is potentially a dangerous and detonable chemical.
The ANGUS product stewardship program for NITROFUEL nitromethane includes regular direct training for drivers and their teams, a dye used to indicate if a sample of NITROFUEL should not be used, an authorized distributor for NHRA-approved race meets, and regular monitoring of races where NITROFUEL nitromethane is used.
