New Lurgi Contracts: Biodiesel Plants for 70 million euro
The two plants in Australia and the US will be among the largest biodiesel facilities worldwide. With the Lurgi-developed Multipurpose Technology that has been tried and tested on a commercial scale, starting in 2006, 360 tons of biodiesel will be produced per day from vegetable oils like palm and soybean oil in those countries. The plant in Spain, in which biodiesel is to be made from rapeseed, soybean and palm oil, is designed for an output of 144 tons per day. The respective contracts were awarded by Natural Fuel Darwin Private Ltd. (Australia), Cargill Inc. (USA) and Tecnicas Reunidas (Spain).
According to expert estimates, the worldwide demand for alternative fuels is expected to rise substantially in the coming years. The European Union plans to lift the share of biofuels from presently around two percent to 5.75 percent in 2010. As a result, the consumption of fuels originating from renewable resources will almost triple, from currently less than 5 million tons to almost 14 million tons a year.
