Uhde wins contract for coke plant expansion in South Korea

30-May-2005

The POSCO group of Seoul, South Korea, the world's fifth biggest steel producer, has commissioned Uhde GmbH of Dortmund, Germany, to build a new coke oven battery for expansion of their coke production. At the same time the existing gas treatment unit is to be retrofitted according to the latest state of technology and its capacity increased from its current throughput of 44,000 m3/hour to 100,000 m3/hour. The new plant will be built at Pohang, a city on the east coast, about 300 km south-east of the capital Seoul. The coke oven battery, which will comprise 75 ovens with a chamber height of 6.7 metres and a total capacity of 750,000 tonnes a year of coke, is to come on stream in mid-2007.

The scope of services to be rendered by Uhde under this contract will include the entire basic and detail engineering for the coke oven battery, the basic engineering for the gas treatment unit, supply of equipment and supervision of the erection and commissioning work.

The total contract is worth some EUR35 million in total for Uhde GmbH and marks a further success in the over 20-year partnership between the South Korean POSCO group and Uhde's Coke Plant Technologies division. Eight expansion projects for the coke plants in Pohang and Gwangyang have now been completed. At present a total of approximately 11.5 million tonnes a year of coke are produced to meet proprietary requirements.
