Siegfried Medal for Pfizer researcher
This year's Siegfried Medal was awarded to Joel Hawkins, an American researcher at Pfizer Inc. The Medal, a CHF 10,000 ($8,000) endowment, is presented by the Siegfried Pharmaceutical Group (Zofingen) and the University of Zurich for extraordinary achievements in process chemistry. The Siegfried Medal strives to raise awareness of the importance of process chemistry for the chemical/pharmaceutical industry. Awarded every two years, the Siegfried Medal's international jury is chaired by Professor Jay Siegel of the organic chemistry Institute of the University of Zurich, and Dr. Hans-Rudolf Marti of the Siegfried Group. Other jury members include international representatives of industry and academia from Europe, North America and Asia - including the Japanese Nobel Prize winner, Professor Ryoii Noyori. Working with a creative combination of chemistry, synthesis and information technology, Joel Hawkins has created an optimized chemical process to manufacture molecules targeted by Pfizer's medical research, in preparation for pilot production. Hawkins' process eliminates or reduces a number of risks, resulting in a dependable and environmentally-friendly, yet highly efficient chemical synthesis. The Siegfried Medal will be awarded to Joel Hawkins at the University of Zurich on October 14, 2004.
