"Elements of Life" - New chemical industry initiative launched

24-Sep-2004 - Belgium

Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, is launching a new campaign to boost knowledge and awareness about chemistry. The centrepiece of the campaign is the website www.elements-of-life.org.

This new initiative stresses chemistry's importance as a constant and often unnoticed companion in our daily life. Right at the centre of all this are the chemical elements of the periodic table, on the basis of which chemists are constantly developing new solutions and products.

"Many people just don't realise how big a part chemicals play in their everyday lives - whether they are playing football, sitting at the computer or driving in their cars. Nor do they realise how advances in chemistry help develop cleaner, safer and more energy-efficient technologies", said Cefic Director General Alain Perroy.

Particular chemical elements are highlighted, creating a surprising link to products which at first sight are not associated with chemistry at all. The campaign website also features a clickable periodic table, "milestones in the history of chemistry" and a puzzle game on the elements (with attractive prizes).

This campaign www.element-unseres-lebens.de was initially developed by a Cefic member federation, the VCI (German Chemical Industry Association). Cefic has adapted it in English for a wider international audience.
