Celanese to source Methanol from Southern Chemical Corporation
Celanese AG announced today that it will source methanol from Southern Chemical Corporation (SCC) beginning in 2005 under a multi-year agreement. The methanol will be produced from natural gas at a 1.9 million ton facility currently under construction in Trinidad and Tobago by Methanol Holdings Trinidad Limited.
Methanol is a key material in the production of acetic acid and other Celanese products. Celanese said the agreement provides the ability to purchase most of its North American internal methanol requirements from SCC.
"This strategic agreement is expected to reduce significantly our overall exposure to the U.S. Gulf Coast natural gas market and provide attractive economics for our core Acetyls business," said David Weidman,
Chief Operating Officer of Celanese AG. "Combined with our leading acetic acid technology, the agreement further strengthens our competitiveness."
