New Technology established for formaldehyde-free EVA emulsion
EVA emulsion is used in wood adhesives, building and interior coating materials, wallpaper, and other applications where there is a need for environmentally friendly materials containing neither solvents nor plasticizers. Demand for formaldehyde-free emulsion for residential-use adhesives and coatings has increased in recent years, as formaldehyde has been identified as a common cause of sick-house syndrome.
Sumitomo has already introduced this new feature in some products and, applying the new polymerization technology, plans to offer all products as formaldehyde-free by the end of this fiscal year.
In related news, Sumitomo has begun marketing Sumikaflex 7400, an EVA emulsion of super high solid content offering high initial adhesive strength and quick drying times enabled by a concentration exceeding 74% (the highest level in the world). Sumitomo is also working to develop an ultra-high-ethylene EVA emulsion (containing more than 50% ethylene by weight) for use as a polymeric plasticizer, which could be applied for environmentally friendly adhesives requiring high adhesive strength with plastic.
Sumitomo has also developed a new surfactant for use in all EVA emulsion production as an alternative to the standard nonylphenol ethoxylates, which are subject to the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) Law.
Sumika Chemtex Co., Ltd., a company in charge of EVA emulsion domestic sales, has begun internet sales with a new concept (its business model patent already applied for) at internationally competitive prices.
Sumitomo will continue to meet customer demands for environmentally friendly EVA emulsions that are internationally competitive in performance and price.
