IChemE and SAIChE sign Memorandum of Understanding

25-Sep-2012 - South Africa

IChemE and the South African Institution of chemical engineering (SAIChE) have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding that paves the way for the creation of a SAIChE-IChemE (South Africa) Branch.

The MOU was signed by IChemE president Russell Scott and SAIChE president Ralph Grob. It follows a strong majority vote in favour of a joint association and follows a consultation with the SAIChE membership, concluded at a Special General Meeting, at the Institution’s 2012 Conference in KwaZulu Natal.

Scott says that the creation of the new branch will provide the benefits of both organisations to a common membership base, assure a platform for growth for the chemical engineering profession in South Africa and deliver increased value to the global profession.

IChemE director of qualifications and international development Neil Atkinson says that the initiative will also have an increased emphasis on professional qualification through the adoption of IChemE’s membership structure as well as providing improved services to members and to the profession in South Africa.

Speaking at the conference, Atkinson announced a number of skills related events and workshops that IChemE plans to conduct in South Africa once the joint branch is established. These include launch of activities in support of process engineering within the extractive industries, workshops in relation to emergent Safety legislation and skills as well as a commitment to developing corporate and academic links.
