Nacelle presents breakthrough production of Prussian White with special nanocoating for sodium-ion batteries
The newly developed Prussian White offers performance comparable to that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. The special nanocoating improves performance and significantly increases the service life of the batteries. Sodium, which is abundant and evenly distributed compared to lithium, enables a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for energy storage.
The use of Prussian White has enormous advantages for the capacity of batteries, allowing the reduction of material used while maintaining the same charging capability, but also significantly reducing the carbon footprint. The previous disadvantage of reduced longevity was compensated for with the help of a newly developed and patented nanocoating, which means that nothing stands in the way of using this material for the cathode. As the material is also non-toxic, batteries produced in this way will also have an enormous advantage in terms of sustainability and safety.
In the coming months, Nacelle plans to complete and fully operate a pilot line for pouch cells. These innovative pouch cells will be able to efficiently store electricity from both the grid and solar cells. This will create the basis for the production of batteries that are versatile and can contribute to stabilizing and increasing the efficiency of renewable energy sources.
“Our freshly developed Nanocoating tackles the temporarily bottleneck of low service lifetime and low charging/discharging rates and allows to reveal the full potential of this wonderful ecologically friendly material. The nanocoating serves as highway for the sodium-ions and allows for a smooth shuttling of the ions into the material. Thereby it circumvents sodium-ion traffic jams, detrimental forces and voltage peaks that harm the material over time and lead to capacity fade. The production of Prussian White with special nanocoating is a significant milestone for Nacelle and the entire battery industry. We achieve capacities of 120 mAh/g and lifetimes of 70% at 6000 cycles. Our technology offers a sustainable and safe alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries and paves the way for an independent European supply chain. While setting up our pouch cell-line, we sell cathode material and are looking for collaboration partners and investors to speed-up the scaling process.,” explained Dr. Alexander Pöcheim, Head of Synthetic Chemistry.
