Electrification of auxiliary equipment

The EV drivetrain efficiency is inherently high, exceeding 80 %. While optimization is still possible, big gains are harder to make. This is where we need to start looking at auxiliaries and their power consumption. For road applications energy savings can be made on as breaking, steering and (active) suspension operation. But way more important is the optimization of auxiliaries for non-road mobile machines (NRMM) such as excavators, wheel loaders…Their auxiliary equipment can exceed the power requirement of the primary drivetrain (for moving) by orders of magnitude! Greg Jones from Ingersoll Rand explains the potential of compressed air and the potential for smart power usage. Electrification allows the intelligent generation of pressure only when needed, alongside further improvements on noise emissions, weight savings, responstime performance etc.
