Who will pay for LFP-recycling? ~3 % cell is the gravimetric amount of lithium in a lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) cell. In comparison to metals nickel, manganese and cobalt for NMC cells, the iron-phosphate is less precious, likely requiring gate fees to make recycling economical for recyclers. To make LFP-recycling more economically viable, further research is done on the pyro- and hydromettalurgical recycling pathways. Interesting to note is that the innovation challenges arise AROUND the core process of the recycling byproducts. Tune for Prof. Friedrich of IME, RWTH Aachen University, giving insights on the current achievements and challenges in Part II/III.
