Sasol Oil Completes ISO-14001 Certification

24-Jan-2001

Sasol Oil (Pty) Ltd announced that its seven divisions have all received certification for the international ISO-14001 environmental management system.

The seven divisions comprise Tosas, Sasol Gas, Product Supply and Trade, Motor Fuels and Lubricants, Fuel Oils, the Natref crude oil refinery and the Natcos crude oil storage facility near Durban. Tosas, Natref and Natcos are all joint ventures between Sasol and Total SA.

Tosas, responsible for the marketing and application of bitumen-based road-coating materials, became the first company in South Africa in 1996 to be certified under the ISO-14001 and BS-7750 environmental management systems.

The Natref crude oil refinery in which Sasol has 64% shareholding (Total SA holding the rest) produces mainly automotive petrol and diesel, jet fuel, furnace fuels and bitumen for the highveld markets.

The ISO-14001 environmental management standard provides for a systemised approach to the pro-active management of all Sasol Oil’s operations, to ensure that its impact on the environment is minimised. Clear accountability, the measurement of environmental impacts and the setting of specific improvement targets with regard to environmental management processes form important parts of the standard.

Hannes Botha, managing director of Sasol Oil, said: "Compliance with the requirements of ISO-14001 by all our divisions is an important milestone for Sasol Oil. It forms part of the Sasol corporate objective to have all subsidiaries certified under this standard and, more importantly, gives our customers the assurance that we are continuously improving our environmental standards as a responsible corporate citizen. We regard environmental protection as an obligation, not a choice."

A total of 21 business units within the Sasol Group have already achieved certification under ISO-14001. Sasol holds about 25% of all the ISO-14001 certificates awarded to South African organisations by the SABS.
