PerkinElmer Life Sciences Introduces Protein S-Nitrosylation Detection Technology

New NitroGlo(TM) Detection Kit Offers New Capabilities for Neurobiology Researchers

14-Feb-2002

BOSTON, MA - PerkinElmer Life Sciences, today announced the availability of NitroGlo(TM), a proprietary detection technology used to fingerprint precise S-nitrosylation (also known as S-nitrosation) sites on proteins. For the first time, researchers will be able to predict precise S-nitrosylation fingerprinting patterns in proteins of interest.

This S-nitrosylation is a secondary protein modification that significantly affects the functioning of the protein, and may be turned on or off during different parts of the cell cycle. It is important in cell signaling, general cellular regulation processes, and may be involved in certain signal transduction pathways, including those associated with cancers and other cell abnormalities. Previously, researchers were only able to detect if the enzyme that produces the S-nitrosylation event was present in a cell, but not if a particular protein itself was being S-nitrosylated. Neurobiological researchers and lab technicians now have an easy, step-by-step kit to fingerprint protein S-nitrosylation sites.

" Nitric oxide appears to signal via S-nitrosylation of a wide range of important cellular proteins," said Dr. Solomon H. Snyder, Department of Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins Medical School. "This new kit provides a relatively simple, sensitive and specific means for detection of these proteins, and should facilitate research in this area." "This exclusive new technology will allow researchers to answer questions and perform experiments that have never before been possible," said Paul Gillyon, vice president and general manager, Research Products, PerkinElmer Life Sciences. The technology can be used with PerkinElmer's Western Lightning chemiluminescence detection kit and the KODAK Image Stations. NitroGlo is a Western blot assay used for the detection of S-nitrosylation events. The KODAK Image Stations will allow for precise and accurate quantitation of modified proteins. PerkinElmer Life Sciences is the exclusive worldwide distributor of KODAK Image Stations.
