Nanotechnology moves into flame retardance

New generation of halogen-free flame-retardant PC/ABS blends developed

14-Feb-2002

Leverkusen - Bayer AG has introduced a new generation of flame retardant polymer blends based on a polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (PC/ABS). The new products in the Bayblend® FR range can be used in a wide range of applications - from thin-wall technology, which requires a polymer melt with excellent flow behavior, through high temperature applications to extrusion or thermoforming applications requiring a high-strength melt.

The new generation of products is based on an innovative, chlorine- and bromine-free flame retardant system. The advantages of this system are achieved using a nanotechnological approach developed and patented by Bayer. Because the flame retardant remains entirely within the polymer matrix during processing, its effectiveness in the end product can be optimized. The new materials naturally meet the requirements of the "Blauer Engel" environmental seal and the TCO '99 standard for displays and personal computers.

The highlight of the new range of products is a material with very good flow behavior that has been awarded the best possible UL 94 classification V-0 down to a wall thickness of 0.75 mm. With its excellent overall property profile it is setting new standards in problem-solving with particular relevance for thin-wall technology applications, e.g. housings for personal digital assistants (PDA) and mobile telephones. Aside from its first-rate flame retardance and processing behavior, this product also features high heat resistance and dimensional stability. It also offers good overall mechanical performance due to its high toughness, improved stiffness and high weld line strength.
