Canadian government acknowledges patent protection for Cipro

24-Oct-2001

Bayer and the Canadian health ministry will take joint steps to safeguard supplies of the antibiotic CIPRO (ciprofloxacin) for Canadian citizens. The objective of the agreement reached yesterday is to ensure that supplies can be immediately provided for the population in the event of terrorist attacks with bacteriological weapons.

Bayer has agreed to supply one million CIPRO tablets to the National Emergency Stockpile System (NESS) within 48 hours on demand. The Canadian health authorities respect the existing patent rights for CIPRO and have undertaken to acquire the antibiotic ciprofloxacin exclusively from Bayer during the period of patent protection.

Furthermore, a team of experts will be assembled to rapidly and efficiently organize future supplies of ciprofloxacin for emergency use.
