Merck KGaA restructured its pharmaceuticals business in Germany
Darmstadt - Merck KGaA has restructured its pharmaceuticals business in Germany. The business with ethicals, which formerly operated as Merck Pharma Germany as a part of Merck KGaA, has been transferred into a legally self-standing company as of November 1, 2004. The new Merck Pharma GmbH in Darmstadt, a wholly owned affiliate of Merck KGaA, is one of the largest subsidiaries for ethicals within the Merck Group.
Today in Darmstadt, the Managing Director of the new company, Rosemarie Schiemer, stated that Merck Pharma GmbH, as a independent company, would gain more room for entrepreneurial maneuver: "Despite this change, Merck Pharma GmbH is and remains a part of Merck. However, this greater independence is necessary to respond flexibly to the challenges of the constantly changing healthcare market."
With around 400 employees, the company markets approximately 60 ethical drugs, in particular for treatment of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, thyroid diseases, and diabetes. Merck Pharma GmbH is one of the leading companies in Germany for systemic corticoids that are used, for example, in severe inflammation of joints or vessels.
