BASF to take over production site at Feluy, Belgium
BASF today (July 11, 2001) obtained approval from the EU commission for its planned acquisition of the SISAS Group's production site at Feluy in Belgium, enabling the deal to be closed officially on July 13th. The integration of the site into the BASF Group will safeguard 312 jobs at Feluy.
Production at Feluy will be managed by BASF Antwerpen N.V. in Belgium. Business activities will be merged into BASF's European regional business units responsible for butanediol/polyalcohols and plasticizers/solvents. Possible cost-saving synergies will arise in the area of administration (personnel, finance, procurement, logistics and IT services), plant maintenance, process development and knowledge transfer.
Feluy can currently produce 92 000 metric tons of phthalic anhydride, 90 000 metric tons of maleic anhydride, 70 000 metric tons of butanediol/derivatives, and 95 000 metric tons of plasticizer. Phthalic anhydride is used to make plasticizers and dyestuffs. Maleic anhydride is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins. Butanediol and its derivatives are necessary for numerous plastics, elastomers and solvents. In addition, Féluy has a biodiesel plant, a by-product from which is used by a partner company (Neochim) to produce glycerine.
BASF Antwerp is a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Ludwigshafen, Germany. It operates Belgium's largest chemical production complex and is the BASF Group's second largest site. The site, which is located on the north side of Antwerp's harbor area, has 54 plants producing fertilizer, plastics and fibers, finishing products and chemicals. BASF Antwerpen employs 3500 people and in 2000 produced products will a sale value of about € 3.2 billion.
