Continuous measurement of TOC (excluding methane carbon)
Guideline VDI 3481 Part 4 (Draft)
The FID method, which is specified in guideline VDI 3481 Part 4, allows both the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) and the measurement of methane. The combined measurement is made possible by using a selective catalytic converter, which nearly completely removes the organic compounds except methane from the sampled gas.
The measurement via converter gives the methane signal, the measurement bypassing the converter gives the TOC signal, the difference of both signals yields the concentration of TOC except methane carbon. The measurement principle is realised in several automatic analysers which are commercially available. The method is suitable for the concentration range from 5 mg/m3 to 5000 mg/m3.
