Borealis prepares for new Borstar® polyethylene plant and new products
Borealis broke ground for its new 350,000 tonnes per year polyethylene plant at its petrochemical site at Schwechat, Austria. Scheduled to come onstream towards the end of 2005, the new plant, to be built by Tecnimont, will utilise Borealis' proprietary Borstar technology. It will replace two old LDPE lines and a HDPE line, and will focus on LLDPE.
"Borealis is committed to match European customers' rapidly growing demand for LLDPE by adding new capacity and introducing new enhanced, differentiated Borstar LLDPE film products for flexible consumer packaging and industrial applications," says David Rolph, Executive Vice President Polyolefins Business Group. "These will add real value for our customers through the inherent benefits of the bimodal Borstar technology such as material savings, excellent mechanical properties and processability."
"Our continued investment in new Borstar production capacity and product development emphasises Borealis' commitment to the plastics industry as an innovative supplier and to strengthen our position in Europe," says Chief Executive John Taylor. "Over the last six months we have announced investments in another 630,000 tonnes Borstar capacity, taking the total worldwide Borstar capability up to two million tonnes per year."
As part of the EUR 200 million expansion project at Schwechat, announced in July 2003, the existing Borstar polypropylene plant will be debottlenecked from 210,000 to 300,000 tonnes per year. Additionally, Borealis will debottleneck its Borstar polyethylene plant in Finland, from 180,000 to 240,000 tonnes per year by the end of 2004, and the Borouge joint venture Borstar polyethylene plant in Abu Dhabi from 450,000 to 580,000 tonnes per year by mid 2005.
