Syngenta Receives First Registration Of Its New Cereal Fungicide ACANTO

01-Jun-2001

Syngenta today announced the first registration worldwide of its new strobilurin fungicide, picoxystrobin. The new generation fungicide is expected to bring major benefits to cereal farmers.

Picoxystrobin, the new broad spectrum strobilurin fungicide from Syngenta, has been granted registration in Germany for use on wheat, barley, oats and rye. It will be marketed as ACANTO®. This is the first of a number of cereal fungicide registrations expected, largely in other European countries.

ACANTO® is a new generation fungicide in the same class as AMISTAR®, now established as the world's leading proprietary fungicide. ACANTO® demonstrates superior curative properties and better performance against barley diseases than competitive products.

The cereal fungicide market is one of the most important in the European crop protection market, and a sector in which the use of strobilurin fungicides continues to grow.

"This new introduction will be an excellent addition to our product portfolio," said John Atkin, Chief Operating Officer of Syngenta Crop Protection. "ACANTO is being brought to market just four years after AMISTAR, which helped propel us to the number one position in fungicides. We are looking forward to significant market penetration with this new product."

ACANTO® provides improved control of major cereal diseases and the opportunity for yield and grain quality benefits compared with existing fungicides. The systemic properties of ACANTO® also ensure long-lasting protection of new leaf tissue, making the product particularly suitable in the early part of the season when cereal crops are growing rapidly.
