Qilu Eastman Specialty Chemical Ltd. Starts Construction on World Scale Plant

25-Sep-2003

Qilu Eastman Specialty Chemical Ltd (QESCL)., a joint venture between Sinopec Qilu Petrochemical Company and Eastman Chemical Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S.-based Eastman Chemical Company, has commenced construction of a world-scale plant here to produce Texanol ester alcohol and TXIB plasticizer in China.

The oxo derivatives plant being built at Sinopec Qilu's existing site in Zibo, Shandong Province, 400 kilometers southeast of Beijing, is scheduled for mechanical completion in October 2004, with commercial production to come on stream in December 2004. Maison Engineers & Constructor (MEC) of Beijing is the main contractor for the project.

Texanol ester alcohol is the leading coalescing aid used in premium quality architectural paints around the world. TXIB plasticizer is a primary modifier for vinyl, urethanes and other polymers for the production of consumer goods such as flooring, wallpaper, artificial leather and disposable medical examination gloves.

This investment is Eastman's second major project in China in the specialty chemicals markets. It follows the establishment of Nanjing Yangtzi Eastman Chemical Ltd., a 50-50 joint venture with Yangzi Petrochemical Industrial Corporation to manufacture Eastotac hydrocarbon tackifying resin for adhesives.
