BASF remains committed to feed enzymes

24-Sep-2003

The successful long-standing feed enzyme alliance between BASF and DSM will be terminated by mutual consent. BASF will continue the feed enzyme business independently.

The alliance jointly developed phytase under the trade name Natuphos®. Through joint marketing and research efforts, phytase has become the most important feed enzyme which is essential for efficient and sustainable animal nutrition.

In the future, BASF will produce and market Natuphos® and other feed enzymes independently. BASF will exclusively take over the technological know-how, the intellectual property and the joint development projects of the former alliance. To further expand its leading position in feed enzymes, BASF will establish a new state-of-the-art production plant.

Until the new plant is on-stream, DSM will continue to produce Natuphos® and other feed enzymes exclusively for BASF and guarantee a smooth transfer of technology in development and production.

"Feed enzymes are an integral part of our animal nutrition portfolio. With Natuphos® and other feed enzymes we offer highly effective feed additives to our customers for an efficient and modern animal nutrition", points out Joshua Rottenberg, head of the business unit Animal Nutrition of the Fine Chemicals division. "We will expand our commitment in the field of feed enzymes and continue to develop innovative solutions to assist our customers to achieve healthy and sustainable animal nutrition."

Phytase (Natuphos®) is produced by fermentation with the fungus Aspergillus niger. It improves the utilisation of feed and simultaneously reduces animals' phosphate excretion. Hence, Natuphos® has economic advantages for the farmer as well as benefits for the environment.
