11-Jun-2003

Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. has disclosed that their 100%-owned Group company Shin-Etsu PVC B.V., in The Netherlands, its European PVC production and sales base, will expand their VCM production capacity from 500,000 tons to 600,000 tons/year. The expansion work is scheduled to be completed in October 2003.

At the end of 1999, Shin-Etsu Chemical, acquired the VCM (vinyl chloride monomer)/PVC (polyvinyl chloride resin) business venture of Shell Chemical Ltd. and Akzo Nobel Chemical NV. From the beginning of 2000, production and sales of VCM and PVC began under the newly named company Shin-Etsu PVC B.V., and right from the start this company has been contributing to the Shin-Etsu Group's profit. With the prospect of growing demand for PVC in Europe in the future, Shin-Etsu PVC has decided to expand its intermediary raw material VCM plant. At the same time, its PVC manufacturing facility will also improve its processes and expand its production capacity by about 10% over its original capacity, that is, from 400,000 to about 440,000 tons/year.
