06-Jun-2003

Dr. Helmut Eschwey, member of the managing board of SMS Aktiengesellschaft, will shortly take over as Chairman of the Board of Management of the globally active precious metals and technology group Heraeus Holding GmbH. The Group thus managed to fill the vacant top management position quickly after Dr. Horst Heidsieck had left the company.

Dr. Helmut Eschwey is married and has two grown-up sons. After his graduation and doctorate at Freiburg University, the 53-year-old chemist worked at first in leading positions in research and development with Henkel KGaA, Düsseldorf, Veith Pirelli AG in Höchst/Odenwald, and with the Freudenberg Group in Weinheim. In 1992, he became Managing Director of Battenfeld Holding.

As member of the managing board of SMS AG, Helmut Eschwey has been responsible for the Plastics Technology Business Area since 1994, an international group of medium-sized plastics engineering companies including brands such as Battenfeld, Cincinnati, and American Maplan. The current Chairman of the Managing Board of SMS Aktiengesell-schaft, Dr. Heinrich Weiss, who represents the family, is one of the most prominent German entrepreneurs.

"We very much appreciate that we have been able to win Dr. Helmut Eschwey, a competent, team-oriented, and internationally-minded top manager, for the Heraeus Group," said Dr. Jürgen Heraeus, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Heraeus Holding GmbH. "On top of his well-proven management skills, he is familiar with the characteristics of privately-owned companies through his former positions in companies that are family-owned in full or in part. He is an excellent communicator in internal and external relations, and he knows how to motivate people for new challenges."

Besides Dr. Helmut Eschwey as Chairman of the Board of Management, the Heraeus Group is managed by Dr. Frank Heinricht, Chief Operating and Technology Officer, and Dr. Dieter Truxius, Chief Financial Officer. Dr. Helmut Eschwey will also assume the position of Director of Labor Relations.
