Acordis: Closure of viscose staple plant, Mobile
The US textile industry, the principal market for Mobile's products, continues to decline having shrunk by 50% in the last decade. Downstream textile and apparel businesses have disappeared due to intense competitive pressure from imports. In addition, costs of key raw materials (wood-pulp, caustic soda) and natural gas have increased dramatically in the last year and it has not been possible to recover these increases in better selling prices. The strong dollar has also created additional difficulties.
