Albany Molecular Research, Inc. Opens New Analytical Labs
Analytical scientists utilize various techniques to ensure the identity and purity of compounds, isolate and characterize impurities, and determine the structure of potential pharmaceutical compounds. They also evaluate the chemical stability of these compounds under various environmental conditions in order to develop appropriate storage systems and understand shelf-life.
The new analytical laboratories will allow AMRI to expand its services in the physical characterization of pharmaceutical compounds, particularly in the area of polymorph assessment. The physical form of a pharmaceutical compound, or polymorph, can affect its solubility and bioavailability, which directly relates to the efficacy and performance of a compound. AMRI's new laboratories will be equipped with an X-ray powder diffractometer and modern thermal and spectroscopic instrumentation to carry out these studies.
The laboratories were added in space formerly occupied by administrative staff at the company's 21 Corporate Circle facility in Albany. Construction began in June 2002 and was completed in October. Total cost of the project, including instrumentation, was approximately $2.2 million.
Since the beginning of 1998, Albany Molecular Research Inc.'s analytical chemistry team has grown from five employees to 51. "This is truly a global department, both in terms of customer base as well as employees. To maintain our commitment to solving the difficult analytical problems often encountered in drug development, AMRI has recruited and hired talented scientists from all around the world," added Allen H. Salerno, Ph.D., director of analytical services.
