Invention that increases energy efficiency
Bayer in the final round for the German Industry Innovation Prize
An environmentally friendly chemical production process developed by Bayer put the company in the final round of the competition for the German Industry Innovation Prize, which is sponsored by the German Federal government. Bayer was honored as a finalist for the award. The innovation that made it into the final round is the new oxygen depolarized cathode (ODC) technology, which reduces the amount of power needed for the very energy-intensive production of the basic chemical chlorine by up to 30 percent. The new process, which was developed in collaboration with ThyssenKrupp, can make a contribution to boosting energy efficiency and to the sustainable transformation of energy systems for industry.
