BASF inaugurates new plant for polymer dispersions in Finnland
Today (October 4, 2002) BASF will officially inaugurate its new plant for polymer dispersions at the Hamina, Finland, site. Hamina is the first production site of the chemical company in the Nordic region. The new plant generates no waste water, has a capacity of 140,000 metric tons per year, and can be used flexibly to produce both styrene-acrylate as well as styrene-butadiene dispersions used as coating binders by the paper industry. The plant, however, can also produce polymer dispersions for different applications, such as decorative paints. The investment totals EUR 50 million. The new BASF site will create 50 new jobs, including external services.
"The inauguration of this plant is a cornerstone in our strategy of strengthening our position as a global leader in chemicals for the paper industry. It is also a clear sign of our commitment to the paper industry in the Nordic region", Dr. Stefan Marcinowski, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, said during the official inauguration ceremony in Hamina. Thanks to the new plant BASF can supply its paper industry customers even more quickly, flexibly and cost-efficiently in future.
Hamina, Ludwigshafen, Tarragona - A BASF Triad in Europe
In the case of high-volume polymer dispersions in particular, the production close to the customer offers logistical benefits. BASF's polymer dispersion plants in Ludwigshafen mainly supply central Europe, the Iberian peninsula is basically supplied by the Spanish Tarragona site. Hamina will cover the market in the Nordic region, including the Russian territory nearby, from now on.
The new plant can also produce BASF's new Basonal coating binder. Such products are tailor-made according to customers' requirements and can be developed and produced for the desired paper quality in a very short time. As the technology of the Hamina plant is almost identical with the first plant of this kind in Ludwigshafen, the company can guarantee a consistently high quality level of its products.
