Siemens gives RWTH Aachen gas turbine model
"We believe everyone involved benefits from linking research, teaching, and industry closer together. For this reason Siemens promotes exchange with universities and students," says Andreas Fischer-Ludwig, Director of the Global Schaufelgeschäft for Gas Turbines in the Division of Fossil Power Generation at Siemens Energy. The donation is part of comprehensive collaboration between the Siemens division Fossil Power Generation and RWTH Aachen. The company supports the university with teaching materials, exhibits, facility excursions, and scholarships. "The close collaboration with Siemens is extremely valuable for our application-oriented research and teaching. The model particularly gives our students tangible access to compley turbomachinery technology," says Professor Peter Jeschke, Head of the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery, which received the gas turbine model.
There are eight universities throughout Germany, which offer corresponding courses of study and specializations and that were selected for this collaboration. A University Liaison Manager or ULM was named at Siemens for each university. RWTH Aachen's is Dr. Dimitrios Thomaidis, Head of Technology Development in the Division Fossil Power Generation at Siemens Energy. He is the central Siemens contact partner for students and professors at the university. A ULM maintains contacts, holds lectures, identifies the needs of the students and professors, and procures teaching and visual aids.
The model is partially cut, so that both the structure and the blading of the gas turbine are recognizeable. It measures 1.5 meters (length) x 0.8 meters (width) x by 1.47 meters (height) and weighs about 100 kilograms. Nevertheless, it is movable and can thus be exchanged within different institutes and chairs. The models are custom-made and cost roughly 60000 euros each.
