Dow Corning wins safety award at IChemE North America Awards
Leading chemical engineers have been recognised by IChemE at the Institution’s first North America Awards reception in Vancouver, Canada.
Dow Corning clinched the IChemE North America Safety Award (sponsored by Chevron) and Nishit Doshi, a chemical engineer lifted the IChemE Young Chemical Engineer of the Year Award.
The successful Dow Corning project centred on the idea that companies with an excellent performance in traditional safety metrics could still be at risk if other safety programme aspects are not managed. The organisation created a culture shift through education, communication and work process changed, reaching almost 12,000 employees worldwide.
Mike Snyder, director of corporate safety, industrial hygiene and loss prevention collected the award on behalf of Dow Corning and says the organisation is honoured to be recognised “As a global leader in the Specialty Chemicals Industry, Dow Corning is committed to managing our occupational and process safety risks as a central part of our journey to becoming a Highly Reliable Organization.”
Doshi was recognised for his research into the development of biomaterials for drug delivery and diagnostic applications. The synthetic platelets he has developed are the most advanced to date and their use has implications in the early detection and treatment of cardiovascular disorders.
Earlier this month, IChemE staged a similar national awards event in Singapore and the Institution’s global awards event takes place in Manchester, UK next month.
The awards were presented as part of the Canadian Chemical Engineering Congress organised by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE). Guest speakers at the reception were IChemE deputy ceo Justin Blades, sustainability expert Roland Clift and the Institution’s Senior Ambassador in Canada Shahana Buchanan.
