Bilfinger Berger advancing expansion of services

05-Mar-2012 - Germany

Dual success for Bilfinger Berger: The company is aggressively pursuing its strategy of intentionally expanding its services business and further strengthening its international activities: The Group has acquired the internationally-active consulting and engineering specialist Tebodin, which is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and is also applying its expertise in power plant technology to a joint venture with Tyazhmash, the Russian power plant outfitter.

Acquisition of Tebodin B.V.: Basis for the establishment of a new Subgroup

Tebodin is one of the leading European providers of consulting and engineering services. The company, which generates an annual output volume of €225 million and has 3,200 employees, is being sold by the Dutch Royal BAM Group. The purchase price amounts to €145 million. The acquisition is subject to approval from the relevant antitrust authorities.

"The takeover of Tebodin is of major strategic importance for Bilfinger Berger", says Roland Koch, Chairman of the Executive Board at Bilfinger Berger. "It takes our engineering services to a whole new level." Tebodin will serve as the basis for the establishment of a new Subgroup at Bilfinger Berger in the area of engineering and technologies. The company will be allocated to the Industrial Services reporting segment.

Founded in 1945, Tebodin offers a broad range of engineering services in various markets. These include general and detailed planning of plants as well as project management, procurement and construction supervision. Tebodin's client list includes more than 150 renowned international companies in the process industry, primarily in the oil and gas sector as well as clients in the chemicals industry, the energy production sector and in environmental technology. The regional focus is on Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. The acquisition opens up a variety of opportunities for Bilfinger Berger to tap into interesting international markets and gain access to new clients, also for other Group units.

"We must be in a position to understand every detail of the challenges our clients present to us. Only then can we offer them excellent solutions. The more than one thousand engineers that join us along with Tebodin will make an important contribution to meeting these challenges", says Thomas Töpfer, who is responsible for Industrial Services in the Bilfinger Berger Executive Board.

Joint venture with Tyazhmash: Entry into the vast Russian power plant market

Bilfinger Berger also has the Russian power plant market in its sights: The newly-founded joint venture with power plant outfitter Tyazhmash has set itself the goal of playing a significant role in the required modernization of the Russian power plant network. "Russia will be investing substantially in the modernization of its energy supply in order to further expand its economy. Together with our partner we want to seize the opportunities that arise from this", explains Roland Koch. Bilfinger Berger holds a 51 percent stake in the new Bilfinger Babcock Tyazhmash.

In Russia, there are more than 600 coal-powered steam generators currently in operation. Tyazhmash occupies a leading position in this sector and has a market share of over 90 percent in the manufacturing and maintenance of coal pulverizers, for example. The main focus is on significantly improving both efficiency and environmental compatibility in the modernization of generally decades-old power plants. “Bilfinger Berger Power Services is making its internationally leading expertise in firing and boiler technology available. We also offer a comprehensive range of products to meet current climate protection requirements. This includes, among other things, cutting-edge technology for the desulfurization and denitrification of flue gases”, explains Joachim Enenkel, who is responsible for Power Services in the Bilfinger Berger Executive Board.

As a result of the acquisition of Tebodin and the close cooperation with Tyazhmash, Bilfinger Berger is once again raising the bar in terms of further expansion and internationalization of its services business. At the end of 2011, the Group succeeded in entering the Indian market with the acquisition of Neo Structo, an industrial services provider.
