Wacker Takes First Step Toward REACH Compliance

23-Dec-2010 - Germany

Wacker, the Munich-based chemical company, has completed the first phase of substances registration in compliance with the current European chemicals regulation. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) confirmed the receipt of 85 registration dossiers and issued registration numbers for each substance. Wacker has thus fully met the first registration deadline set by REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). These substances may now be produced within or imported into the EU without restriction.

In March 2009, Wacker submitted its first registration dossier. Up to this year’s deadline, which affects so-called phase-in substances produced in annual quantities above 1,000 metric tons and which expired on November 30, Wacker sent a total of 85 dossiers to the European Chemicals Agency for review.

“Every dossier has been accepted by the authorities, and all the substances have been registered. We have fully met our obligations for the first phase of REACH registration,” says Auguste Willems, member of Wacker’s Executive Board. “Delivering these reports on time is an important milestone for us. In the EU, it ensures that we can continue manufacturing or importing these materials and the products made from them.”

The first step on the long road to REACH registration came at the end of 2008, when the company pre-registered each of the substances it produces in quantities of one metric ton per year or more. At the moment, Wacker is preparing more than 250 registration dossiers for the subsequent REACH steps. All in all, the company has calcu¬lated the total cost of REACH compliance by 2018 to be around € 30 million.
