ABB to supply distribution transformers to CERN research center in Switzerland
ABB will supply vacuum cast coil dry-type distribution transformers with power ratings of up to 12,000 kilovolt-amperes (kVA) to replace existing ones at CERN to power the LHC.
ABB’s EcoDry99plus is part of a family of ultra-efficient distribution transformers and meets CERN’s stringent efficiency and environmental requirements. They minimize losses by offering over 99 percent efficiency, which translates to a saving of 33,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year for every 1000 kVA transformer operating at full load. This is equivalent to the average power consumption of 10 standard households.
“We are proud to be associated with a leading research agency like CERN,” said Tarak Mehta, global head of ABB’s Transformers business, part of the company’s Power Products division. “Low losses, high efficiency and minimized operational costs were critical factors in CERN’s decision to choose ABB’s transformers.”
ABB has previously supplied CERN with three 2,500 kVA dry-type transformers, which have already been installed at the Geneva site as part of another project.
