Bayer MaterialScience invests in integrated production network

Stronger networking of production facilities at the Leverkusen, Dormagen and Uerdingen Chemparks

15-Jun-2010 - Germany

Bayer MaterialScience will continue in the future to network its activities in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) at the Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen Chemparks. This task transfers as of July 1, 2010, to the Bayer subgroup's newly established NRW site management unit. "The production sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Uerdingen will become even more strongly interdependent. For this reason, we want to manage and develop them uniformly by way of a joint site management unit, similar to our integrated production site in Shanghai, China, or our U.S. plant in Baytown, Texas," explained Bayer MaterialScience board member Dr. Tony Van Osselaer.

Close cooperation within the integrated production network offers several advantages. It creates an organizational structure for the uniform implementation of regulatory requirements imposed on the company in North Rhine-Westphalia. Another advantage is new synergies. An integrated production network offers significantly more possibilities in areas such as personnel management, purchasing, infrastructure and raw materials supply.

Management of the integrated production network is to be headquartered at the Dormagen Chempark, because of its advantageous location between Leverkusen and Uerdingen. Dormagen is home to Bayer MaterialScience's largest production plants with the most production employees in the state of NRW. Furthermore, Bayer MaterialScience wants to invest EUR 150 million in a new, high-tech TDI production plant there, which should add to the importance of the site.

Head of the new integrated production network will be Dr. Klaus Jaeger, who for the last three years as Bayer MaterialScience site manager has coordinated the operation and further expansion of the integrated production site in Shanghai. "We demonstrated our pioneering spirit in China by building an integrated production site founded on the latest technologies, infrastructure and services. In North Rhine-Westphalia, we can take advantage of this experience to benefit our entire company," Mr. Jaeger said. For example, TDI production in Dormagen has been advanced by the development of new technologies. The pilot facility there serves as a model for the construction of the new TDI world-scale plant in Shanghai, China. In turn, the experience gained in China is already being integrated into the plans for the world-scale TDI plant to be built in Dormagen.
