Oltu stone

Oltu stone is a kind of black amber found in Oltu, in the area of Erzurum, Turkey, used for ornamental reasons. It has been formed from fossilized resin and clay or lignite.

It is mined in the areas of Yasakdag, in the Dutlu, Alatarla, Hankaskisla, and Cataksu villages. It is soft before coming to contact with air, after which it hardens and can be easily processed into jewelry, beads and other artifacts.
