Neutral axis

An axis in the cross section of a beam, shaft or the like along which there are no longitudinal stresses / strains. If the section is symmetric (in both geometry and materials) the neutral axis is at the geometric centroid.

The intersection of the 'Neutral Surface' with any cross section of the beam perpendicular to its longitudinal axis is called the Neutral Axis.

All fibers on one side of the neutral axis are in a state of tension, while those on the opposite side are in compression
