Interface and colloid science

Interface and Colloid Science deals with heterogeneous systems. "Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science by J.Lyklema [1] offer following definition of colloid:

"...an entity, having at least in one direction a dimension between 1 nanometer and 1 micrometer. The entities may be solid, or liquid, or, in some cases, even gaseous. They are dispersed in the medium..."

There is a term for these entities - dispersed phase or dispersed particles There is a term for the medium - dispersion medium.

Interface and Colloid Science is an important and fascinating, though often undervalued, branch of science. It has applications and ramifications in chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, ceramics, minerals, nanotechnology, and microfluidics, among others.

All these systems have one common feature: they contain colloid size objects, which leads to highly developed surface area relative to the volume. It is surface related phenomena, therefore, that primarily determines their behaviour in various processes. This dominance surface, or "interfacial", related phenomena justifies consideration of colloids as effectively a different state of matter.

There are many books dedicated to this scientific discipline [2], [3],[4],[5], [6].

There is also glossary of terms "Nomenclature in Dispersion Science and Technology", published by the USA National Institute of Standards and Technology [7]
